Paint the town tartan – Dumfries unveils a three-day festival of music, carnival, cabaret and theatre
Scotland’s national bard joined in with today’s launch of the programme for Big Burns Supper 2014.
The statue of Robert Burns, in the centre of Dumfries, was clad in tartan and surrounded by performers in costumes that will feature in the Homecoming Carnival – a major attraction for BBS 2014.
The three-day festival, which runs from 24-26 January, wrapping round Burns Night itself on the 25th, will offer a fabulous mix of live music, cabaret, theatre, comedy – and all the haggis, neeps and tatties as you can eat.
There was a warm welcome for the festival programme from Fiona Hyslop, Cabinet Secretary for Culture and External Affairs, who said: “The success of the young festival, which is financially supported by Scottish Government agencies, is a great credit to the talented local team behind it and the people of Dumfries and Galloway.”
Dumfries Provost Ted Thompson, added: “The Big Burns Supper is a popular event and I am sure that it will be a fantastic addition to the early part of the Homecoming 2014 programme.”
At the heart of BBS 2014, which is key part of the Homecoming Scotland and Scotland’s Winter Festival celebrations, will be acts such as:
• The great Scottish rock sound of Big Country
• Sensual Spanish-born singer Buika
• The richly diverse Mull Historical Society
• Folk guitar genius Dick Gaughan and special guests
Caroline Packman, Homecoming Scotland Director, said: “We are delighted to be working with The Big Burns Supper as part of the ever-extending Homecoming Scotland 2014 programme.
“The festival continues to grow from strength to strength and I’m sure the Homecoming Carnival will really capture the essence of the 2014 celebrations which focus on placing the spotlight on our greatest assets and icons.”
