Opportunity for School Pupils in Dumfries

As part of our invisible festival celebration of Big Burns Supper 2021 – we are going to replace our usual festival banners on the Whitesands with powerful artistic ideas by young people.

We will pick one pupil from each of the four burgh secondary schools, and one student from Dumfries & Galloway College – and hang their work in public view in a minimum of two locations on the Whitesands. This work will hang for four weeks. Pupils / Students will also receive a £75 Gift Voucher in recognition of their achievement.

We are looking for colourful ideas that help to transform the environment and have the ability to lift the spirits of our local people when they look at them. They might offer the spectator an alternative perspective or they might simply make the spectator feel good about the town. We will be looking for striking, confident styles that help us position Dumfries as the contemporary, confident capital of South Scotland.

Each banner is vertical, so your design should be portrait. If you want to design to scale, the dimensions are 60cm x 200cm, but don’t worry – we will scale this down for you.

We can accept any medium of design as long as we are able to see a scanned version of it by the closing date. To make the competition fair, we cannot accept any submissions to the competition after the closing date.

Pupils should self-submit this work as we want to encourage an enterprising next generation of creatives in Dumfries. The closing date is 30th December at 3pm. Only one entry per pupil. By submitting your work you give us the express right to reproduce your art for the period of the festival. We may make copies of your work for future promotion of our opportunities and programmes, but the art work will be explicit yours.

The judging panel will be made of two external artists and two members of our team. We will notify successful applicants by 6th January.
