•• Big Burns Supper to launch LOVE DUMFRIES campaign ••

Organisers of the Big Burns Supper announce a new campaign which is delivered in partnership with Dumfries & Galloway Council to help local businesses take advantage of the economic benefits that the festival provides.

A new guide as part of the Festival called ‘Love Dumfries’ showcases restaurants that have special opening hours and menus during the festival, available online and in the festival brochure.

There will be a host of events under the Love Dumfries brand which will include free cookery demonstrations and product tasting from the area, helping connect our audiences with the rich culinary on offer in Dumfries.

The Love Dumfries initiative also showcases other festival and events which take place across Dumfries & Galloway in 2018.

Graham Main, Executive Producer said:

“Volunteers and local businesses make Big Burns Supper what it is and without their support we just couldn’t stage it. Unlike green-field festivals, town centre Fringe Festivals like ours supports direct economic impact with the local businesses that operate year-round, which helps to give our festival lots of meaning.”

Big Burns Supper has grown into one of Scotland’s biggest festivals with audiences expected to spend more than £1million pounds through tickets and other services when the festival takes place from the 18th – 28th January in 2018, and has emerged as one of Scotland’s most sustainable event models, with less than 13% of its overall budget being generated by public funding, which includes a budget reduction of 31% from Dumfries & Galloway Council.

Scottish Winter Festival / Burns Night

  • Burns, our national bard, is one of Scotland’s favourite icons encapsulating the very essence that makes Scots Scottish – creative, proud and confident.
  • Robert Burns, or ‘Rabbie’ as he is affectionately known, was born in Alloway, South Ayrshire, in 1759. He began writing poetry and songs at an early age and became famous across Scotland for his writings.
  • After his death at the age of just 37, Rabbie’s works became internationally renowned and to this day, people from all corners of the world sing ‘Auld Lang Syne’ to bring in the New Year.
  • Every year on Burns’ birthday, 25 January, Scots and Scots at heart from across the globe celebrate his life and cultural legacy by hosting a Burns Supper. The traditional components include addressing the haggis, toasting the lassies and reciting the Selkirk Grace, however there are often many modern variations and twists on these traditions.
  • Learn how to hold your own Burns Supper as well as the meaning behind some of the most beloved words and phrases and more about the life of the Bard himself by visiting scotland.org/burns
  • The Scotland’s Winter Festivals event fund is managed by EventScotland
