The 14th Big Burns Supper has just been announced and our programme this year includes an extension of the Northern Lights project. This is a combination of immersive performance and hidden spaces as well as bringing to life some of our favourite heritage sites through light and sound.
We have lots of opportunities for primary school pupils from across Dumfries & Galloway to take part in dance, history and Burns.

Take part as a school group in Dumfries Carnival
Dumfries Carnival will be making a return to the festival this year. School groups will be able to take part in the outdoor event as a whole group in Dumfries on the 17th of January. Thanks to funding support from the Holywood Trust we’re able to provide resource for any young person in our region to take part.
We have two final Carnival spaces left.
These include full day’s Dance Workshops on 19th, 20th & 21st November.
One full day of dance at your primary school so that children can participate in the Carnival on the 17th of January.
Schools would need to provide a large space, preferably a school hall but we can accommodate other spaces as we understand that school space can be difficult to find sometimes.
Teachers and the class need to be available to take part in Carnival on 17th January
For the first time we are introducing our one hour workshop around Robert Burns and the Burns Mausoleum. This is aimed at upper primary school level and will include an interactive workshop highlighting the story of Burns in Dumfries & Galloway and giving the pupils the opportunity to redesign Burns Mausoleum. These sessions incorporate local history, Scottish studies with art and design included. These spaces can be booked in advance. These will all be offered on a first come, first served basis.
These will be running in two blocks in late December and early January.
Please note: Where a school scheduling system has made it difficult for us to attend, we may contact you to request a change to help us manage our resources.
Big Burns Supper team visited over 34 schools in 10 days last year.
Lantern Making
Your school group can now register to have our team visit your class to make lanterns for Dumfries Carnival. Each session runs for 90 minutes, and we provide all the materials as well as our guest artists.
This year, we have split the region into different days to make it easier for our team to get around each school. This activity is suitable for all ages, but lower primary school pupils may need an extra helping hand in the class room.
