Dumfries Carnival is part of the Big Burns Supper which returns to the streets of Dumfries in January 2025.

We are looking for an energetic community dance practitioner to join our performing arts team one day a week in Dumfries from September through to January.

You will have responsibility for 6 primary school groups across the East of our region for sessions that run on a Thursday.

Our Dance practitioners devise the street theatre movement for our costumed Carnival Parade which runs on the 18th January 2025.

Each group is given a different section to work on and we tell the story through different performance parts, fusing to create a magical outdoor show featuring a combined cast of over 600 participants as well as 2,000 members of the public who will join the lantern procession.

All candidates will be working in a school and community setting and are expected to have disclosure for the work.

 

 

The role

 

  1. Work collaboratively with our Creative Director to come up with the performance for each group you are working with.

 

  1. Research the context of each performance piece to develop dance narrative which can be explore in the classroom.

 

  1. Support pupils to have fun in the workshops space by using game play and support our ambition for inclusive practise by creating a workshop space where pupils can thrive.

 

  1. Create around 10 different narrative frames for each school group, ranging repetition, canon and special sequencing which is in constant movement.

 

  1. Take responsibility for the health and safety of pupils in the workshop space (with the teacher) and ensure all pupils have warmed up and are ready to work.

 

  1. Support the abilities of all pupils by designing movement which is accessible by a wide range of pupils.

 

  1. Inform teaching practise by encouraging teaching staff to run the dance pieces when you are not there.
