Escape into the magic of Christmas at a special showing of The Snowman in Dumfries

Looking for the perfect way to embrace the magic of Christmas?

Stand by for a screening of arguably the most Christmassy film ever made – the classic animation The Snowman – with live accompaniment from Dumfries Community Choir and a string quartet featuring musicians from across Scotland.

There will be only three performances of ‘The Snowman Live’ and they will take place at the new pop-up cinema at the Loreburn Hall in Dumfries on December 22nd and 23rd.

Composer Gary Cameron, who has created scores for the BBC, Commonwealth Games and National Theatre among others, is joining forces with celebrated producer Patsy Reid to create the performance.

Patsy, a traditional fiddle player who has performed and worked alongside Kylie Minogue and Mark Knopfler, will lead the string quartet as they underscore the original screening.

The ever-popular Dumfries Community Choir will sing. With a YouTube audience of more than 100,000 they are south Scotland’s biggest vocal ensemble and have played Edinburgh Castle and welcomed the Olympic Torch to Dumfries and Galloway.

The Snowman tells the story of a young boy who makes a snowman which magically comes to life. The film animation, based on a picture-book by Raymond Briggs, has become an all-time classic. It is set to music and has no speech other than the central song ‘Walking in the Air.’

“We wanted to do something magical this Christmas at the Loreburn Hall and this combination of animation and live music is just the treat to get everyone in the mood for Christmas,” said Graham Main, executive producer of the arts co-operative Big Burns Supper which runs the Loreburn Hall.

The performance marks the 40th anniversary since The Snowman was first broadcast on Channel 4.

The Snowman Live is at the Loreburn Hall, Dumfries at: 12pm and 7pm on December 22nd and 12pm on December 23, 2022.

Tickets are available on www.bigburnssupper.com/event/the-snowman-performed-with-live-score-u or by calling 01387 733717 or in person at the Loreburn Hall, 10am – 4pm Monday to Friday.

As well as the Snowman Live, the Loreburn Hall is also staging two Sunday Christmas Markets on 11th & 18th December.

During the Christmas Holidays the cinema will present Matilda the Musical! and Black Panther.
